Kilkishen/Bodyke 2-13 Newmarket-on-Fergus 2-11 (Shannon Camogie)
Having lost their opening round game to Kilmaley, Kilkishen/Bodyke really needed to get a win in their round 2 clash in the Senior Championship, and they did just that. In an intense game played in summer heat, Kilkishen/Bodyke came out on top on a score line of 2.13 to 2.11.
Aoife Ryan, Siobhan Lenihan and Kate Lynch from a placed ball had Kilkishen/Bodyke up 3 points to no score after ten minutes, before Zoe McInerney knocked one over to settle Newmarket.
On the twenty-minute mark Kilkishen/Bodyke found the Newmarket net, when Kate O’Gorman with a hand pass to Roisin Minogue who executed perfectly raising the first green flag of the encounter.
The Blues through Aine O Brien responded quickly with a point from a placed ball. Newmarket had a strong spell in the second quarter with four unanswered points, 2 from Clodagh O’Halloran and 2 from Aine O’Brien and a goal from Brid Enright but the amalgamated sides free taker Kate Lynch kept them ticking over.
Newmarket were ahead at half time with just 1 point between the sides.
Newmarket introduced Jenny Kelly for the second half and instantly caused problems for Kilkishen/Bodyke defence, but again Lynch and Lenihan’s free taking accuracy kept them ahead on the scoreboard.
Clodagh O’Halloran added her third point from play with Aine O’Brien converting from a placed ball shortly after. With 56 minutes gone Kaci Toomey registered her first point in the Senior Championship at the sweet age of 16.
Again Lenihan responded from a placed ball and shortly after Kilkishen/Bodyke found the Newmarket net for the 2nd time, a free won by Kate O’Gorman saw Kate Lynch drop the ball in around the square which Aoife Ryan crashed to the back of the net drawing huge celebrations from their sideline.
Kilkishen/Bodyke added two more points to their tally and the last score of the day went to Roisin McMahon who in a goalmouth scramble, sent the ball into the Kilkishen net. In a game where both teams needed their free takers in top form Kate Lynch and Aine O’Brien didn’t disappoint.
