Clare Camogie Match Report: Kilmaley 3-14 St. Joseph’s Doora Barefield 2-11

Clare Senior Camogie Championship – Saturday, 8th August 2020

Kilmaley 3-14 St. Joseph’s Doora Barefield 2-11

Kilmaley made it two from two on Saturday evening when they defeated St. Joseph’s Doora-Barefield in the second round of the Clare Camogie Senior Championship in Fr. McNamara Park. A fine evening ensured that a tight contest was ahead for these two young sides.

Sara Ni Ceallaigh went to full back for Sarah Reidy with Nora O’Rourke coming in on the wing, while Aishling Cahill came back into the half forward line which saw Claire McMahon going back into the edge of the square instead of Lauren McGuane from the starting team over Kilkishen/Bodyke.

Kilmaley started the game off strongly with Emily Cahill dominating at mid field, this resulted in good ball being supplied to the inside forward line and the Kilmaley girls had the back of the net rattled after two minutes thanks to Chloe Neylon.

However, it was all St. Joseph’s Doora-Barefield on the scoreboard from here to the first half water break as they scored 1-03 without reply 1-01 coming from Louise Woods to leave the score Kilmaley 1-00 St. Joseph’s Doora-Barefield 1-03 with 15 minutes gone.

Claire McMahon got the scoreboard ticking over for KIlmaley again with a point from a free, but Woods responded to extend Barefield’s three-point advantage. McMahon free, Caoimhe Carmody and Aisling Cahill brought Kilmaley level 1-04 a piece with 25 on the clock.

A Ciara Duggan free followed by another from Carmody and an inspirational point by captain Niamh O’Dea put Kilmaley in front with half time fast approaching. Duggan converted another free to leave the sides level 1-06 each at the half time whistle.

The half time break gave both teams time to rehydrate as there was still quite a bit of heat. Duggan pointed from a free on the resumption but Kilmaley found their stride and hit 1-03 without reply in the next five minutes with the goal coming from Neylon again on the 33rd minute.

Barefield responded with another from their inform Duggan before McMahon added two more frees for Kilmaley with the second half water break fast approaching.

Before referee Ger Hoey blew for the water break Duggan had the ball in the back of the Kilmaley net to leave Kilmaley leading by three 2-11 to 2-08.

The introduction of some fresh legs saw Kilmaley outscored St. Josephs Doora Barefield 1-03 to 0-03 in the last 15 minutes with scores coming from substitute Grace Carmody, McMahon two frees and Neylon with her third goal this time a hand pass into the net to leave the final score Kilmaley 3-14 St. Joseph’s Doora-Barefield 2-11

This result now leaves Kilmaley on top of the table with 4 points. Next up is Newmarket-on-Fergus on August 15th who have two points along with Kilkishen/Bodyke and Barefield also on two points after the second round.

The final round of the Clare Camogie Senior Championship will be eagerly awaited by both sides.
