The opening round of the 2020 SportsDaz Ladies Football Team of the Year is over with plenty of surprises and intriguing results as the 48 defenders were cut down to 24.
Meath’s Sarah Wall topped the poll with 59.9% in her quarter-final followed by Kerry’s Ciara Murphy, Meath’s Emma Troy and Armagh’s Bláithin Mackin.
Meath secured semi-final spots for all six defenders with Cork coming next with five qualifiers. Armagh and Dublin took three spots each; Donegal and Kerry got two; with Clare, Louth and Tipperary already advancing.
Among the shock eliminations were Westmeath’s Fiona Claffey (intermediate player of the year nominee); Dublin trio Leah Caffrey, Niamh Collins and Aoife Kane; and a wipe out for Galway as Sinead Burke (who missed out by just 0.2%), Leanne Coen and Nicola Ward don’t advance.
The defenders are back in action again on Wednesday (17th February) on twitter when the 24 remaining are whittled down to 12.
Keep an eye out on twitter on Tuesday as the 49 forwards begin their campaign in their respective quarter-finals.
